Long ago, a clandestine war raged between Heaven and Hell, with humanity serving as their unwitting pawns. While the Prime Evils of Hell were embroiled in their epic conflict, their lesser lieutenants conspired to overthrow them. This mutiny unfolded suddenly, with the combined forces of Hell overwhelming the three Primes.

Stripped of their immense power, the Primes were banished to the mortal realm. Agents of Heaven, upon discovering this treacherous plot, located the three Primes and imprisoned them within gemstone confines. Each gem was sent to a different corner of the Earth, guarded vigilantly to prevent any escape.

Set in the fictional Kingdom of Khanduras within the mortal realm, "Diablo" places players in the role of a lone hero on a mission to cleanse the world of Diablo, the Lord of Terror.

As centuries passed, the influence of Heaven's agents waned, and eventually, even the inhabitants of the town of Tristram forgot that deep beneath their chapel lay the soul of Diablo, the Lord of Terror. With the weakening of his prison, Diablo extended his corrupting reach into the world, manipulating the dreams of the land's benevolent king and driving him to wage senseless wars on neighboring kingdoms. Khanduras became a land consumed by conflict, destruction, and suffering.

Now, the once-thriving lands lay in ruins, inhabited solely by monsters and the restless dead. Whispers of a solution to the demonic scourge, as well as tales of untold riches, beckon adventurers from distant lands to the humble town of Tristram.

Players begin their journey by selecting their character's class: Warrior, Rogue, or Sorcerer. Warriors possess the highest strength cap and can perform weapon and armor repairs within the dungeons, albeit at the cost of reducing an item's durability. Rogues boast the highest dexterity cap and possess the ability to spot and disarm traps on treasure chests. Sorcerers excel in magic and can recharge the charges on spellcasting staffs using their own mana.

Characters can equip various gear, including armor, weapons, and accessories, all found within the ever-changing dungeons beneath the chapel. However, powerful equipment may have attribute prerequisites for use. Most equipment boasts randomized stats, but formidable adversaries may drop Unique weapons with predefined attributes. Magic spells can be acquired by discovering magic tomes and improved by collecting multiple copies of the same spell tome, although advanced spell levels remain inaccessible if a character's magic attribute is too low.

Upon defeating enough monsters to level up, players earn additional attribute points that they can allocate to their preferred attributes. Occasionally, the few remaining townsfolk may task players with quests, which typically involve slaying exceptionally powerful monsters or retrieving unique items from the depths of the dungeon. Completing these quests results in valuable rewards.

ESCAPE - Brings up the main menu.

B - Open the spell book

C - Views the character information.

I - Examine inventory.

Q - Reads the quest log.

S - Displays the spell book.

Z - Zooms in or out.

SHIFT - Hold down when attacking to prevent the character from moving.

TAB - Displays the map.

+/- - Zoom the map in or out.

ARROW KEYS - scroll Automap.

1-8 - use specific belt item.

F5-F8 - Highlight spells in spell book and press f5-f8 to assign hotkey. Once assigned, the key will prepare that specific spell.

F9-F12 - Auto Send messages during auto play.

ENTER - Open message window or send message.

SPACEBAR - Closes all open windows.
